Assignment: Comments on FUKUYAMA's reading

a)According to Fukuyama,
Is genetic engineering of humans likely to occur in the future?
Of cause not for now, but in the future yes.

What are the main obstacles?
First obstacle is complexity of human nature. Various human traits are caused not only by single DNA but by multiple genes. However this can be overcome by doing many experimentation and accumulate data, same process as developing new medicine.
Second is ethical problem upon human experimentation. Since genetic engineered baby should have has serious health problem. It is not easy to overcome since it is inner issue, but Fukuyama asserts at the bottom of third paragraph, "We need, then, a balanced assessment of what this technology can be expected to achieve, and a sense of the constraints that it may eventually face.". I think "a sense of the constraints" includes the ethical problems, thus we should try to solve the problems.
Finally, the problem of population. The technology of genetic engineering may have impacts on more large scale like human society, not only a matter of individuals.

b)Reactions
I felt all these developments among technology, including genetic engineering, will enable human species to shift into higher level in the future, that is to mean, something like extending potential human capability such as mental strength, the speed of brain processing information or physical strength. For example, human in the future may can live in the space or in the submarine with out air. At the moment, it sounds like science fiction story and quite absurd. Indeed, curing disease is the range of our realistic imagination can reach. However in the years to come, the discussion among extending potential human capability will occur, and at that time we will face certain question; What is human? The identity of human species will collapse.
